OSAA is an organization of members of Alabama’s seafood industry and it affiliates. According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service, the Alabama seafood industry in 2006 contributed $270 million to the economy with an employment impact of over 11,000 people. The goal of OSAA is to promote, protect and market the seafood industry of Alabama and its related activities.
Examples of recent achievements and activities include fighting dumping of imported foreign seafood, assistance in creating a non-profit co-op and obtain funding for a plant to produce products from crab and shrimp waste to comply with environmental regulations, and securing funding for the promotion of wild caught shrimp. OSAA is certified by Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries to manage Alabama’s seafood check-off program, the first state check-off established for seafood promotion. OSAA has been successful in obtaining legislation needed to support Alabama’s seafood industry.
